Dear Freshmen class,
I cannot believe that the year is coming to a close already. I feel that I have grown closer to everyone of you, and gotten to know you all much better. It has been a fun year, and we have learned so much together. The best part of english was learning all new types of writing. I never knew many of those types of writing existed until this year. I have also enjoyed the books that we have read in class. They were entertaining and very informative at the same time.
We are all blessed to have a great school to go to, and get a good education. I feel that all of you have become much better English students, and I am glad that I was there to see you all improve. It has been great learning with you all.

Procedures for this year
This year, honestly I wish I would have done better with my procedures. In general, I had all my supplies when I needed them. Also I rarely left the class room for water, or going to the restroom, so I did well in that subject. In class discussion, I had some trouble. Sometimes, I blurt out irrelevant things thats are unnecessary to the class discussion. I also lose focus often and talk to my neighbors, instead of Dr. deGravelles. I believe that I have grown much in my writing and reading this year. I am very proud of myself for the progress that I have made.

Reading This Year
As I look back at this years writing, I am very surprised. Honestly, I thought that reading this year would be a pain. to my surprise, it was fun. I learned much about the styles of writing, and how to read like a reader. In learning this, I was able to read with a better understanding of the plot, theme, characterization, setting, and Point of view. By reading more, I could notice the things that we were discussing in the course as I was reading.
I have learned many things about myself as a reader. I notice a drastic change in my reading understanding. By learning how to annotate in the books that we have read this year, I can focus on the more important things in the books. Also, I have learned how to read quicker, while still having a good understanding the material. I have grown much in my reading this year, and have enjoyed it as well.

Lady Macbeth's perspective
It is very complicated to be Macbeth's wife. He is kind husband. When I heard that he was going to be king, all I could think was "How will this happen?" and then I thought of something else. The power. I want the power, not just for my husband, but for me. I need to take action. I can easily manipulate Macbeth, by being harsh, yet seductive. I was right, he gave in just as I thought. Wait. What is this feeling that I am having. Could it be guilt? Maybe, I need to wash my hands.

Writing This Year
This year, I have learned much from writing because we have written multiple papers in various categories. For example, we learned how to write a literacy narrative, a profile, a literary analysis, and a global issues paper. I feel that my writing has grown through my experience in writing this year, however I still have much to learn. This year’s course has been much more demanding than last year’s, but it helped me improve my writing. Because it has been demanding, I have had help along the way.
One thing that helped me become a better writer is the feedback that I have received from Dr. deGravelles, as well as my fellow classmates. As I look at that feedback, I can see the improvements that have been made. My ideas are probably my strongest point in my papers because I have received either an A or a B in that grading category. If I were to develop my ideas, my writing would be much improved. On the contrary, my organization is my worst writing category, although it could be more effective if I were to organize my paragraphs in a way so the audience can easily understand the point I am trying to get across. This is my main problem with my organization, although I believe it has improved much as well because my grade in this category has improved.
Along with organization, I have developed my choice of transition words from a difficult aspect of writing to a much easier one, which has been reflected in my last two papers. Another category related to word choice is sentence fluency. As I look over my papers and the WRAP, I have noticed there is a little choppiness in my sentences and transitional phrases. Sentence fluency is a key component to my success, so I hope to keep improving it.
The last category of writing that I will discuss is conventions. It has also given me trouble throughout my entire English career. I have noticed a few patterns in my convention mistakes. First of all, I tend to have trouble using possessive apostrophes. I especially have trouble with the word “it.” I do not know when to use the apostrophe when trying to express ownership, but also do not know when “it’s” means “it is.” I also have trouble with comma usage. I am not sure where and when it is appropriate to use a comma. Still, my use of conventions, just like all of the categories of writing, have greatly improved throughout the course of the year. My feedback has been very helpful in improving my writing.
I agree fully with all of the feedback that I have received. The way that I evaluate my papers has also changed. I look more closely at the sentences by themselves, rather than looking at the paragraphs as a whole, which has made my sentences more clear.
I have a very obtainable, reasonable goal in mind. Now that I have read and responded to my feedback, my goal for my English career in the future is to write high quality, easy to understand, successful papers. I also want to write more emotionally, and connect to my writing topics more closely. Furthermore, I want to improve my conventions and word choice. This goal will help me become a better, more successful writer.
Common Errors List
1.) Comma splice - Literacy narrative. “But Hitler did not stop at the persecution of the Jews, he also killed many handicapped people, Gypsies, and Homosexuals.”
2.) Underlining titles - Literacy narrative “I read the book Night by Elie Wiesel.”
3.) apostrophe use - Profile “i can hear the tone of his patients.” Profile
4.) Quotations - Profile quotations not attached to sentence correctly
5.) Pronouns - Profile pronouns used to much, t got confusing
6.) Capitalization - Literacy analysis “Truman” Need to capitalize proper nouns

Catching Fire
I have continued to read Catching Fire. I am getting very close to the end. After Katniss and Peeta made an alliance, they devised a plan to kill of the others. They were tricked, and their companions turned on them. The entire arena was blown to pieces, as Katniss was trying to survive. It is interesting to see all the survival skills That Katniss uses.
I noticed a few key things as I read this book. First was the voice of Suzanne Collins. She has a dark tone in theses last couple of chapters. Also, the way that she characterizes Katniss, Peeta, and all the others is interesting. She characterizes them all as fierce, but striving toward a common goal. Lastly I notice the word choice that is used. The word choice in this book enhances the story, and makes it more exciting.

"The Funeral" by Band of Horses
I am analyzing "The Funeral by Band of Horses. I chose to analyze this song, because it has poetic meaning. It uses caesura, enjambment, image, and personification. My first literary devise I found was an enjambment.
Really too late to call,
So we wait for; morning to wake you
Is all we got
To know me as hardly golden
Is to know me all wrong, they warn.
The enjambment contributes a few things to the song. The author uses this enjambment to make the reader look at the sentence alone. This line alone gives a sense of sadness and loss of hope, which is the main idea of this song. " Really too late to call," gives us this feeling, because if you can not do what needs to be done.
My second literary devise I found in this song is caesura. At every occasion, I'll be ready for the funeral" This caesura breaks the idea into two parts. It shows the importance of each as an individual. It adds meaning to "At every occasion" because it is seen by itself. It is important because it lets the reader know he will always be ready.
The last two poetic devises I found are personification and image. Personification is used in the lines
"To the outside: the dead leaves lay on the lawn For they don't have trees to hang their own." This personifies the leaves. By personifying the leaves, the reader can better understand how the writer wants us to see the leaves. Lastly I saw image. In the same lines, I could picture the smell of the lawn, and the look of the tree and leaves. This devise gives the reader and idea of what it would be like to be in the place being described. All these devises contribute different things to the poem, that makes them better.

"My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke
"My Papa's Waltz" is about a drunken father, and the daughter not wanting him to leave her. This poem shows a few of the Literary terms we talked about. First, I notices the Imagery in the poem. In he fist line is says " The whiskey on your breath could make a small boy dizzy;" I could imagine the smell of the whiskey when I read this.
Also, there is a use of a simile. In the third line a=of the second stanza, it says "I hung on like death:" This is saying she was hanging on to her father, and was holding tight, as death would hold on to someone. It also creates and Image in my mind. I can see a hooded figure in my ming when I read this. This line creates a sense of sadness and fear of the girl.
Also I noticed an enjambment in the poem. in the fourth stanza, second line, it says " With a palm caked hard by dirt," This makes the reader focus on that line alone, because it is important to the poem. Also in this poem, I did not notice any assonance or consonance, but I did notice rhyming throughout the poem. This poem uses those elements or poems to see the poem the way the poet sees it.

Catching Fire
I continued reading Catching Fire, after I took a break from it. I was near the end when they were in the arena. They had a alliance with a couple others. Katiniss and Peeta try to ignore the fact that they have to ffigure out who will kill the other. Peeta tells Katniss that he will die, because she has a life to go back to, and he does not. She does not refuse this, but in her mind, she wants Peeta to live.
As is read, I noticed a few key things that the author does. Suzanne Collins uses suspense to keep the reader reading. I could not put the book down. Second, she creates a very clear image in the readers mind, so it is easier to understand what is going on in the book. Lastly, I notice her use of characterization. She characterizes all the characters in their own special way, that makes them unique.

Harry potter and the Goblet of Fire 3
This week I read chapters 15-20 19 of Harry Potter. First off, The Two other schools, The Beauxbatons and Durmstang. Many are impressed with Viktor Krum. Also, the Goblet of Fire is introduced to them. Harry is called from the Goblet. He is very confused, as well as the other students. The students make fun of harry and insult him. Lastly, he meets Sirius in the fire place, and they discuss the games.
J.K. Rowling continues to do a good job of exciting the reader, and using good characterization to really make the characters come to life. The intense scenes are very well written. She uses good voice and the plot is well described. I continue reading this book on the edge of my seat.

The Hunger Games
Friday night I went to see the Hunger Games which was the movie based off of the best selling books by Susan Collins. I read the book awhile back but when I heard they were making into a movie I was really excited to see how it would turn out. A lot of the scenes in the book are really gory and violent so I thought there would be a lot more blood and violence, but there wasn't as much as I thought. Another good thing was that Susan Collins was involved in making the movie so I knew she probably wouldn't let them change it too much.
I was really surprised by how well the movie was made. They did have to cut out some of the parts in the book that were really violent but for the most part they stayed true to the book. Some of the lines that the actors say in the movie were exactly form the book. I wish they would have included some parts form the book they left out but for the most part it was a great movie.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire 2
I have been continuing of reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Where I left of the Quidditch World Cup. After they got back from that, Harry and the others went to sleep. He was awoken because hooded figures were going through the tents and taking Mud bloods. Harry and the others ran to the woods, to find a house elf with Harry's wand, which had just casted the spell for the dark mark. They then go back to school and learned about forbidden spells.
Rowling continues to give her characters distinct voice and characteristics. She makes her characters come to life with such great details about the characters. Also, she keeps the reader on the edge, and wanting to keep reading. I will continue to read, because I am anxious to see what happens.

How I feel about reading
Reading can be both fun and boring. It all depends on what I am reading. I mainly like to read action books. For example, the maize runner series were my favorite books of all time. I just love the excitement of the story. I also like to read mysteries. Mysteries are very exciting as well. I like to be able to read, knowing that something unexpected and exiting will happen at any moment.
In general, I like to read. The only thing I don't like to read is books about history. Factual books tend to bore me. Also, I would very much like it if we could be tested on more exciting books, so we would be paying more attention when we read. Mostly, reading is a good way to learn, and have fun. As long as you are reading the right genre for you.

The New Boston Red Sox
I have always been a very big fan of the Boston Red Sox, mainly because of my father, who lived in Boston. Me and my dad always watch the games every night they play. It is one of the main types of ways that me and my father bond. We are both excited for the new season coming in April. It will be interesting to see how they do this year.
Their manager, Terry Francona, was fired at the end of last season. They did very bad at the end of the season, and blew the playoffs. Their new manager is Bobby Valentine. It will be very different for the Red Sox next year, because Bobby Valentine has a very different way of managing. I am excited to see the Red Sox compete this April.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
I have started to read Harry Potter 4, because I do not really have another book that I wanted to read. I read chapters 1-8 and this is a very brief summary. Harry wakes from a terrible dream. He goes downstairs to see his dreadful muggle family. Harry gets an invitation to go to the Quidditch World Cup. He goes to the Weasley's and the go to the world cup, and the Irish win.
Rowling does a good job of pulling in the reader. She keeps a good energy flowing with the characters, and they all have very distinct characteristics. For example, Hermione Weasley is a very intelligent, but also caring character. Also, the plot of the book is very different and exciting, which also keeps a reader reading.

This week I have been reading from Nervous Conditions. You can see the nervousness of Tambu and Nyasha really come out in the last couple of chapters, explains the name of the book obviously. Tambu gets tested on material that she has not prepared for. But, she has an advantage because she knows most of the knowledge.
She is nervous about going to school, and missing Nyasha. When she arrives, and her uncle and aunt leaves, she really likes school. When she goes back home, she sees the terrible conditions of Nyasha. She is very skinny, and anorexic, and Tambu is worried about her. She feels very trapped at the end of the book, and is a sad ending. Overall, the book was okay. It was difficult to read, but I like it overall.

this weekend
This weekend has been very long, but also was fun. I had a baseball tournament from friday and saturday. First, we drove up to Monroe on friday, and had one game. Then we had two games the next day.We played three teams in all, and went 1-2. Even though we did not win all of our games it was still a very successful trip. I feel that we got better by going on this trip, and playing very competitive teams.
Everyone on my team worked hard this weekend. We did not to the best we could do, because I believe we would have defeated all the teams we played this weekend if we did. Over all, it was a very good experience. We improved, and we realized we need to work harder in practice to achieve our goal of winning the state championship.

nervous conditions chapter 6-7
In chapter six, one major event happens. Nyasha and her father get into a fight. The reason for the fight, is the disrespect that Nyasha shows Babamakuru. The scariest thing about the fight is Babamakuru threatens to kill Nyasha. After that fight, Nyasha is in a whole different world. She does not want to talk to anyone, or interact with anyone. I believe that this fight will change her forever.
In chapter seven, Tambu, Baba, and Nyasha go back to the homestead. She comes back surprised, to see her home is in bad condition. Her mother is home, and her father was with a man named Takesure. Also, Lucia is a new character. The names have been quite confusing in this chapter. Especially because they call some characters, multiple names. All in all, chapter 7 was about the family coming together once again.

# English problems
Right now, I have been pretty stressed out. I have had a lot of homework, and it has been mostly English. With the vocabulary cards, 150 minutes of reading, and nervous conditions questions, it has been hard to handle that, and my other subjects as well. I find myself trying to get ahead in other classes, but never finding the time to do more to bring up my grade.
Honestly, the hardest part of getting all of my work done is sports and guitar. I have baseball practice everyday, except for sunday. With so much practice, it is hard to get all of my work done. I take baseball very seriously, so I cannot just skip a day if I have to much homework. I have been trying to find time to do guitar as well, because it is a hobby that I really like. I really hope that the work load in English decreases some, because I have been trying to make time for many things that need to be done, and my other subject grades have been suffering lately, because I do not have as much time as I need to study.

Skyrim
Skyrim is a very addicting video game, and is also very fun. I think it is so fun because you can do almost anything in this game. You get to choose from many different creatures to be in the beginning of the game. Each type of character has different special abilities. For example, I choose to be an High Elf, so my magic is automatically easier to cast than others.
The game setting is in a place called Skyrim. Your main quest is to defeat Alduin, a dragon god, who is trying to destroy the world. It might seem like a "Nerdy" game, but it is very fun. I play it on the weekends, when I am bored usually. It is a very popular game right now. I hope that the game does not keep me from other important endeavors, but still keeps me entertained.

Nervous conditions
So far, honestly, I am not enjoying Nervous conditions. I am not saying that it is not a good book, but is is not really my favorite genre. I am still getting through the book though. So far, I have read up to chapter three. The primary focus of the story has been on the main characters brother, who died. It is a bit interesting though, to see the way that Tambu describes her brother.
Nervous conditions is not and easy read. Sometimes I find the plot is hard to follow. You have to read carefully in order to understand what is going on in the book. Also, there are many characters in the book, which is also very confusing. The last difficult thing to manage in Nervous conditions is the language, Sometimes the dialog of the book can be confusing, because they are from Zimbabwe. Over all it is a hard read, but it is manageable.

My room
My room is one of my favorite places in my house. I can relax in my room, and have my privacy. I like to just lay on my bed, and play music or just sleep sometimes. I have pictures of my good friends and family on the walls, along with some of my favorite sports teams.
When you walk in my room, my bed is sitting in the dead center. To the right in the corner is my desk where I do my homework. I have my bean bag chair in the far right corner, where I usually play my guitar. Next to my bed I have a dresser that has some pictures of my Family on it. I feel relaxed in my room, which is why it is my favorite room in the house.

Coal pollution progress part 2
I am currently working on my rough draft on my project. I believe it is going quite well. I have turned in my rough draft, and as I was reading over it, I noticed that my ideas did not flow very well. I need to work hard on my final draft, and fix some mistakes I made.
The process has been hard work. I have been working on this project for a while now, searching for good, useful information that I could put into my rough draft, that would be a good contributor to my thesis statement. I will continue to revise my paper, and work hard to get the grade I need for this paper.

My pets
My family has always loved animals. Currently we have three dogs and a cat. We have a Bichon Frise, a Catahoula, and an Australian Shepard mix. Their names are Chloe, Lucy, and Sissy. They are all different in their own special way, and have very different personalities.
Chloe is our families Bichon. She is very social, and loves to eat, and sleep. She is quite lazy, but very sweet. Lucy is our Catahoula. She is very nervous around strangers. She is very loving, however she is very crazy. She loves to play and swim, and she never runs out of energy. Sissy is our Australian Shepard mix. She is the old, and wise dog of the family. She is very smart, and sweet. Lastly is our cat Tiger. He is sweet sometimes, but he can be mean as well. even though all of our animals are different in many ways, we love them all.

Coal pollution progress
I have been working on a project for social studies and English. I am researching about the coal pollution in China. It is very interesting to see how pollution on the opposite side of the world, has such major affects on the world. The research is long and tedious, but it will improve my paper by providing useful information that supports my thesis statement.
This week we have been in the writing lab working on our rough drafts in class. I have gotten far in finding more useful information, and I will soon begin my rough draft. I am looking forward to working on this paper and successfully write a paper that is informative, and true to my thesis statement.

My Favorite Place in the World
By far, my favorite place in the world is a small town called Watercolor. Watercolor is where my beach house is. This little town is so relaxing, and everything is easily accessible. There is a pizza shop one hundred yards from my beach house, along with a grocery story, toy store, and other restaurants. The real reason I love it so much though, is because of the people I am with in Watercolor.
My family, and two of my families go every summer. The guys usually hang out at the beach, and we dig holes taller than us. Also, we play kickball, which we have played every year, for seven years. It is like a traditional thing that we do there. Every night we go and get ice cream. It is always with the entire family though. The family experience is what I think makes Watercolor so great. I wish I could be there with them all the time.

readers response Catching Fire
Catching Fire is getting better and better. Since Peeta and Katniss are going back into the games, they needs to make allies with some other tributes at the training facility. They are successful, because when they do go into the games, there one of there allies saves Peeta's life. It is very sad to see them have to go back into the games, but it is definitely more interesting.
Suzanne Collins continues to impress me. She does a spectacular job characterizing the other tributes, and their attitudes. It was exciting to see all of the victors come together, and fight again. You can tell that the ideas in the book flow well, and her transitions are very good. I hope to continually be impressed with this series as I read.

The Maze Runner series
The Maze Runner series was the best series I have read. It is about a boy named Thomas who is sent off to a place called the Glade. The Glade is a place that is run by WICKED, and organization that was made to fight a disease called the flare. Thomas and his friends are fighting wicked, because they subject them to doing test, to help find the cure for he flare. Thomas and his friends adventure through tough, and deadly situations, to find a place they can call home.
I would recommend this book to anyone that likes adventures, scary fictional characters, or enjoy action in general. I found that I enjoyed this book most, because of the amount of suspense that it has in it. You don't want to stop reading because it is so suspenseful. I found this series is very enjoyable, and I hope many others do to.

Readers Response on end of The Death Cure and Catching Fire
I finished The Death Cure, and picked up where I left off on Catching Fire. The Death Cure was by far my favorite book. The end of the book was very captivating, and I could not stop reading. It was very sad to know that the series is over, but it was a very good series. The author definitely knows how to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. The vocabulary was a little challenging, but not very. The sentences flow very well.
In Catching Fire, I am at a very interesting part. Katniss is back in the games. The interesting part I am in, is when she is trying to make allies with Peeta. The author has kept me turning the pages. The vocabulary is a little bit challenging. The word choice is also good. I am looking forward to reading more of this book.

goals for english second semester
For second semester, I hope to keep up my grades. Also, for the new semester, I want to become a faster reader, and a better writer in general. I need to work on my organization mostly, and also my word choice. If I do these things, I will become a more successful writer.
Some other goals I have, is to get a 3.7 GPA. To achieve this goal, I will work harder and listen better in class. Also, I will ask my teachers for help more often, and come and see them more in my free time. These goals will help me achieve a successful high school career.
