"My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke

"My Papa's Waltz" is about a drunken father, and the daughter not wanting him to leave her. This poem shows a few of the Literary terms we talked about. First, I notices the Imagery in the poem. In he fist line is says " The whiskey on your breath could make a small boy dizzy;" I could imagine the smell of the whiskey when I read this.

Also, there is a use of a simile. In the third line a=of the second stanza, it says "I hung on like death:" This is saying she was hanging on to her father, and was holding tight, as death would hold on to someone. It also creates and Image in my mind. I can see a hooded figure in my ming when I read this. This line creates a sense of sadness and fear of the girl.

Also I noticed an enjambment in the poem. in the fourth stanza, second line, it says " With a palm caked hard by dirt," This makes the reader focus on that line alone, because it is important to the poem. Also in this poem, I did not notice any assonance or consonance, but I did notice rhyming throughout the poem. This poem uses those elements or poems to see the poem the way the poet sees it.

  1. I read this one also. Is this your interpretation? I don't remember it saying she was a girl. Great post Cole.

  2. I did the same poem as well. I noticed the rhyme scheme, enjambment, and the simile. Good job Cole.

  3. Good connections to the literary terms that we learned in class. I was thinking about doing this poem, but did "The Whipping" instead. Good job.

  4. Pretty good, Cole. I like how you use specific examples of each technique and examine the effects. Try to specify the rhyme scheme. What makes you think the speaker is female? Can you build an overall interpretation of the poem from these observations?
